Piety
Charles Simic

A plain black cotton dress
On a wire hanger
In a closet otherwise empty,
Its door ajar to the light.

If you open your eyes,
You'll note it sways ever so slightly,
It shudders in the draft
Of undetermined origin.

Or is it your own breath?
Reaching that far
Despite the miles of frozen
Stubble, stone, earth.

If you close your eyes,
There's even a tiny rip
On the level of thighs,
The curlicue of blackest thread.
