I understand the cognitive dissonance, but not only did I not find Ronnie stupid, but I have said that intellectuals rarely belong in politics, and politicians therefore should not be expected to be intellectual. What one wants are sound principles and good "instincts". Obviously, I relate better to someone like Jeane Kirkpatrick, but I am not sure about her instincts... I am glad that you agree on Eyes Wide Shut, although I do not think that the uncertainty should be exaggerated.Yes, it is there, but the ending, although not fully resolved, is hopeful, and chastened, and so the uncertainty is not, perhaps, the main point... |
