Worldwide PC Shipments Rise 27% in 2nd Qtr, Lifted by Cheap PCs
Framingham, Massachusetts, July 26 (Bloomberg) -- Worldwide personal computer shipments rose 27 percent in the second quarter, as consumers were lured by cheap PCs and rebate offers from Internet access providers that made some machines free.
U.S. shipments rose 35 percent, according to International Data Corp., a Framingham, Massachusetts, research firm. Dell Computer Corp. almost overtook Compaq Computer Corp. as the No. 1 PC maker in the U.S., as the two shipped almost the same number of machines in the second quarter.
