I am a native Washingtonian, and I will call it a world- class, cosmopolitan city. Most cities have problems with eroding tax bases, the accumulation of poor people in the inner cities, and decaying infrastructure. Those are not the things that make Washington unique. It has the greatest museum complex in the world, a couple of great universities, and a few good ones, and some of the best combinations of public monuments and parkland one could find. It has many beautiful shopping promenades, and many fine restaurants, a great performance complex (Kennedy Center), one of the best regional theaters in the country (Arena Stage), and arguably the 2nd best orchestra, after the New York Philharmonic, in the country. I has many lovely, livable neighborhoods, admittedly in affluent areas, but even some of the less expensive neighborhoods, like Adams- Morgan, are pretty nice. Even Anacostia is not as homogeneously horrible as a lot of white people think, although too many of the nicer areas are deteriorating, and/or abut slums... |
