Piss-ant is in the OED, it just says "an ant," but if you have an OED, look at the etymology of pismire, apparently some ants or some ant-hills have a urinous smell. The ones I've smelled just smell sour, maybe it varies by species.

I always heard pissant as a pejorative against a short, cantankerous man. I've always preferred tall men, and tall men frequently find that their very height makes some short men angry, one guy I dated, who was 6'2" called it "short man's disease," and the term has stuck with me. Not all short men have it. But the ones that do, I call pissants.
