The record date is simply the date the transfer agent closed his records on who will receive dividends (ugh), splits or spin offs. Should you purchase the stock after the record date but prior to the actual event, you trade with a due bill. This means you are entitled to the money or stock. With today's technology you have little to fear as to being overlooked. Hope this helps you and others.
