Compaq Files Suit Against emachines Charging Patent Infringement

Company Committed to Protecting its Research Investment and Ensuring Fair Competition in the Marketplace

HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 26, 1999-- Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ - news) today announced it is suing emachines, Inc., its South Korean parent companies Trigem Computer and Korea Data Systems, and Trigem America for patent infringement in the Federal District Court for the Southern District in Houston, Texas. In the suit, Compaq identifies a total of 13 patents held by Compaq which emachines and its parent and affiliated companies are infringing.

''Compaq invests a great deal in research and development to advance the state of technology and improve the computing experience for the end user,'' said Thomas C. Siekman, Senior Vice President and General Counsel. ''We cannot allow our investments in research and development to be misappropriated by emachines or anyone else.

''Competition in the marketplace is good for consumers and the industry,'' Siekman continued. ''But it's extremely important that companies compete fairly and not through unauthorized use of another company's technology. Compaq is committed to protecting its research and development investments.''
