Nathan,
Re: "Also, I have heard that shark doesn't support Fibre Channel connectivity."
It supports Fibre Channel:
Most important, though, is its ability to work with heterogeneous hosts -- S/390, UNIX, Windows NT and AS/400 -- and with a variety of interfaces, including ESCON, Fibre Channel and Ultra SCSI.
Re: "IBM doesn't have the software."
Sounds like they do:
Software is a crucial piece of the puzzle and through products from the Storage Systems Division (SSD) and IBM's Tivoli unit, the IBM Enterprise Storage Server will incorporate a full range of intelligent storage functions such as data partitioning, peer-to-peer remote copying, extended remote copying, Parallel Access Volumes and FlashCopy.
Re: " They are even getting knocked by STK on this announcement."
Sour grapes. Nothing else to say about STK.
Did you really think that IBM was going to come out with a shabby product to compete with EMC, with the huge market at stake that storage is? I mean, they do have a bottomless pit of money to spend on R&D. Like someone else said, this more or less validates the terrific opportunity that is out there in the storage market. Look at it like a Cisco going head to head with a Lucent in the networking area. I think they'll both clean up, as will EMC and IBM in storage.
