I am a CPA and just discovered your thread when following up on Steve leaving SI. I have been lurking on SI for the past three months and did not have anything to contribute; primarily following the covered call thread and came to admire Steve and his fine educational comments.

In regard to your thread, I had several attempts in the lated seventies by the IRS to treat heavy traders as "dealers" in securites in an attempt to eliminate their long term capital gains which were very advantageous at that time. The IRS were unsuccessful at that time due to various court cases.

After April 15 I will do a little research and advise you of my findings.

If I were to send you an Email to be forwarded to Steve, would you be willing to do so? I have great admiration for him!
