dmf,

Intel's management made a huge mistake several years back. They pushed too many resources over to IA-64 and left their x86 flank exposed. In contrast, AMD's management was very diligent and built a processor which will soon give them the x86 performance lead.

It is odd that Intel's management did not learn from the mistakes of Compaq (ACE and Alpha) and IBM (PowerPC), and still pushed ahead with a new architecture at the expense of their bread and butter x86 business.
