Salivary Titers Of HIV-1 In Children And Adolescents "Extremely Low"

WESTPORT, Mar 25 (Reuters) - Results of a study released this month suggest the risk of
infection from exposure to saliva of HIV-1 infected children is low.

Dr. Ann J. Melvin of Children's Hospital, Seattle, Washington, and colleagues used polymerase
chain reaction (PCR) as well as viral culture to detect HIV-1 in saliva and blood samples collected
from 13 HIV-positive children, aged 1 to 15 years, the majority of whom were taking antiretroviral
medication.

While 12 children had evidence of HIV-1 in cultured peripheral blood mononuclear cells, none was
positive by saliva culture. On PCR testing, "[o]nly 1 of 13 saliva samples yielded positive test
results for HIV-1 RNA, and none did so for HIV-1 DNA," the investigators report. The HIV-1
RNA-containing saliva came from a 10-year old boy who was asymptomatic and was not currently
taking an antiretroviral.

"Our findings corroborate the epidemiologic observations of the lack of infectious risk from
exposure to salivary secretions and should give confidence to guidelines stating that
HIV-1-infected children can safely attend day care centers and schools," the authors conclude.
