David -
Despite what you may read on the "I hate CPQ" threads, CPQ machines have one of the best reliability records in the market. Their consumer service policy was a weak spot in 1997 but has improved in the last year, although they are still not up to the standard DELL maintains. Their support of Enterprise customers is second to none - that's one of the reasons they have more Intel-based server sales than the next 2 players combined, and more than 4 times DELL's sales.

Technically, CPQ has created many of the innovations which the industry currently enjoys. For example, they co-designed the 8-way corollary chipset which DELL uses for its 8-way XEON products. They also pioneered many of the bus and memory innovations which Intel has adopted and which are now standard.

Reputable companies like IBM, Intel, DELL and others work out patent licensing or cross-licensing arrangements with CPQ to compensate CPQ for the use of their patents. If E-Machines chose to copy those designs without bothering to negotiate patent rights they are stealing intellectual property.

I guess that's one way to keep costs down...
