Dell Computer Offers Internet Access to Consumers in US
Round Rock, Texas, July 27 (Bloomberg) -- Dell Computer Corp., which already sells $18 million worth of personal computers a day over the World Wide Web, said it will offer U.S. customers free Internet access when they buy a PC.
The program offers one year of Dell's new Internet service, called Dellnet, to custmers who buy a Dell Dimension PC, which sells for $959 or more.
Dell Computer Chairman and founder Michael Dell first disclosed plans for the service at the company's annual meeting on July 14, saying Internet access was a key part of the company's strategy to expand its sales to consumers.
''You will see Dell aggressively enter the market for Internet access,'' Michael Dell told about 2,500 shareholders, although he provided few details of the service.
Dell, based in Round Rock, Texas, near Austin, is contending with falling prices. Rivals such as Free-PC.com Inc. and Micron Electronics Inc. have offered free computers to customers who agree to buy online service.
Still, Dell has stopped short of giving away machines in exchange for selling services. Instead, it will give customers 150 hours of Internet access a month, with charges of $1.50 an hour if they use more time.
The Dellnet package also offers other Internet-based services and support for PC customers, the company said.
The service is similar to an Internet access package Dell unveiled in Europe last month.
