Elmatador: Interesting piece. It is correct that the market is small and so the funds for development were reduced. However, the core networks are still moving towards ATM main switches, even UMTS stipulates ATM within the fixed network. For the last mile, I believe we will see an explosion (and I chose that word carefully) of ADSL, particularly now the ITU have ratified it. Of course to make sure that there are no bottle necks, ATM will play an important role in the backbone.
The article brings up the argument about one supplier providing complete solutions. Is this good or bad? Some would believe bad, as it encourages less choice. Ericsson has, certainly in the past and even now, looked at more co-operative deals to provide operators choice. Anyway, I find it interesting in how ADSL, ATM and DWDM will finally be integrated to provide the much hyped information superhighway...it is coming, finally.
BTW, the writer of the article you posted is one of the worse I know. He used to cover the Nordic countries (from Germany) for Commuincations Week International. Unfortunately, he was incredibly bias and/or lacked perspective of the various Nordic markets (by country). My views were brought up in a meeting with the publisher of CWI a few years back...backed by clippings of all his reports.
Sorry John, should you ever read this, but you never listened. |
