David Mason reviews the company The company is the only Canadian-listed investment company (the type often referred to as a merchant bank) that specializes in financing early stage emerging resource companies with less than $5-million market capitalization. If other investment vehicles with similar objectives do exist, it is most unlikely that they share the philosophy of risk reduction that is the company's unique structure. It immunizes its portfolio through blue chip investment and negotiated deals with resource companies, and leverages its portfolio through warrants and options. The objective of increasing assets by more than 40 per cent per year has been exceeded for most of the history of this company. While the third quarter was disappointing, Augen saw a turnaround in the fourth quarter. The principal contributors to the company's success were investments in Foran Mining Corp., Millstream Mines Ltd., and Dumont Nickel Inc. In all three cases, the investment objective was to provide funds for ore reserve definition, using and applying sound geological theory. These investments all involved flow-through shares for tax write-offs, and were highly leveraged with warrants and options.
