Not at all odd. Once the word leaks out - as it must - then Emerald must publish to get their public due. To this extent there was a hurry-up on Emerald's part. In other words, they created the situation which then ballooned to force their hand. Emerald and Iomega are both regional businesses who have a successful history of feeding off each other. What other independent research company is looking at IOM? Those Buckingham figures were very, very cautious and probably based on H&Q figures. They all seemed to have forgotten that it was never the ZIPs but the disks that would make the money, and steady production of ZIPs would lead, at least in the short term, to a quadratic increase in disk sales. Todd Bakar's company has no particular interest in public announcements, but i imagine that their customers have been quietly buying.
