I got the feeling that Atiq wanted AMD to diversify away from CPUs - into the internet/networking area. I could easily image Jerry being very reluctant indeed to give up his campaign against Intel.

It sounds like Atiq may have been having some problems dealing with reality. AMD needs to keep their eye on the ball. They are very limited in financial resources, and have exactly one shot at the big time right now- Athlon. It is absurd for them to think about new businesses until (if and when) Athlon starts bringing in a steady stream of revenue.
