I agree. There are are "quite a few" deadbeat bidders.
I base this on my experience. Some are not serious ebay members and
are just trying it, or I have had an occasional kid bid without
permission.

They are a far bigger problem than any shielding tactic, and the nice thing about ebay's business model is that it shield's them from the financial consequences much more than the seller, but I'm there using
ebay's service to make money so I have to live with the pros and cons of that venture. The only comments I have about that report on the seller who got shielded down to $225
is:
1) I would never bid on an auction in which only the seller can
cancel. Things happen, and in the end if the buyer refuses
to pay, no money has exchanged hands and it is unprofitable
to go after him anyway.

2) If the item was listed to sell at $225 less a reserve, then the
seller should stop wining like a greedy little kid and live
up to his end of the bargain. That's part of doing business,
especially in an auction environment. You win some big and you
lose some. That's the name of the game, and the way it
has always been.

3) I would lay down good odds that the reporter covering this
story has never used ebay in his life and is nothing more
than a parrot that can repeat and paraphrase. That's why he
did not have the insight how to get both perspectives on the
story.
