Ramsey Su, You might want to consider doing some research on
BlueTooth - which will be one way (if not the best way ) to
enable these devices to communicate together.

I doubt that the average person will want to carry more that a
lap top and a cell phone. Nor would they want to spend much
time talking into their laptop, or typing on their cell phone.

BlueTooth would allow one to use the phone as a means of connecting
to an ISP, an IP network, or a nearby cellular transceiver- while
maintaining continuous radio contact with his/her laptop via the
BlueTooth radio frequency interface.

On a smaller scale, a number of people are currently participating
in various Silicon Investor threads with a radio-modem device
made by a company called Metricom (MCOM).

You might want to visit that thread.
Actually, you might say that the future is already here.
