Tony, IMHO, IA_64 would be the biggest disappointment in intel history. Because IA_64 series are totally different kind of
animals compared to x86 series. For the first time, Intel products
need to be deployed in heavy duty computing environment which
needs RAS. It is not the yield or manufacturing capability that
will matter, it is the real world application performance that
will matter. Intel as a slave drive company which always obey
"Make exact same copy" methodology has no experience whatsoever
to deal with heavy duty computing environment. Merced will not
even be in production according to Intel itself, why? because
they don't have the confidence or capability to compete in the
marketplace. Intel doesn't have the history of innovating new
product but it is a manufacturing guru. But now the falling margin
in PC processors would finally show the weakness of this company
on financial front. It would be lucky for INTC to stay in 60's
range next year this time. Intel will be a second tier company
if it can't reinvent itself in internet age. And Intel needs to
learn from SUN on what internet is all about, the design teams
need to scream to themselves "Network is the computer" and wake
up to make a difference. But I doubt if they can do it, because
the talented engineers are not joining intel anymore due to the
lack of performance of Intel stock for last two years now. And
this downward spiral will have negative feedback to Intel.

Of cause, all are just MHO. But this vision of the future makes
me a long term SUN investor.
