Today's WSJ has QCOM short interest as of 03/15/97 going from 3,600,000 to 5,900,000 or and increase of 2,600,000. Percentage wise that's a huge increase for one month. There had to be a lot of buyers to keep the stock at its current level of 60. Without the Rotomola and ERICY suits it probably would be trading at 70 +. Why is it that the two US companies QCOM and IDC and their proprietary rights have been challenged in the US courts and not one Asian company has challenged them ? With all the companies that have licensed with both of them their patents had to be reviewed by thousands of lawyers all over the world. Twice the judges in Germany have held up the validity of IDC's patents and Siemens who was a part of that suit withdrew and licensed with them. Still Alcatel appeals the appeal. In the Motorola Vs IDC case it is now in the appellate judges hands and ERICY has shelved it's case against IDC pending the results of this appeal. Seems Mot and ERICY would rather see the competition spend their money on legal fees rather than R&D. I hope to see both of issues settled in favor of IDC and QCOM.

I would like to clarify one thing about B-CDMA . It will not be in competition with CDMA in the USA now or in the near future. The future telecommunications market has Asia at 40 % and Europe at 30 %. The rest of the world equals the remaining 30 % and the USA is in that group. Early implementation of B-CDMA will targeted in areas were people have never made a phone call. The first phase is stationary , the second will allow neighborhood roaming and finally full mobility which is far away. Gregory Webb the CEO of IDC was asked on CNBC before the roll out of CDMA if he thought the technology would work. He stated it can and will work. As I look back maybe the perfect marriage would have been QCOM and IDC. As it stands, should they both be winners in the courts they would own proprietary rights to almost everything.
