daffodil: Coleman Lanterns: I spoke to a tech-type there and was told the following:

the very bright one is called the Northstar 5359-H700, weighs about 8 pds, about 15" tall, and abut 7" width. It takes 8 Ds, lasts about 8 hours on high, about 20 on low- he said there is not that much difference between hi and low in brightness.

They also make another one, dont' recall model # , the double flourescent tube, not quite as bright, but a few more hours on the same batteries, about 9 and 20. These times are intermittant use.

I am going to get one Northstar, too large to move around conveniently, and some of the Ray-oVacs to keep in each room.
They are similiar to the second Coleman type, small and convenient, similar also, I assume, in brightness and hours per set of batteries, also takes 8Ds. By buying in large bulk, the price of the batteries will be somewhat less.

Coleman also makes another one, using a 6volt battery, that is pretty bright, but only last about 14 hours per battery.

He said also that the lite doesn't dim that much as the battery discharges.
