SF, After you get 98 up again, the first thing you should do is
create a new directory under c:\windows called regback or something.
then at a DOS command prompt,
attrib c:\windows\system.dat -r -a -s -h
and the same for user.dat
then just copy c:\windows\system.dat and user.dat to
c:\windows\regback directory. I do that before each program I
install anything.
Then, next time your Win98 messes up, you can do the
attrib thing, then copy from your regback directory to c:\windows.
that will restore you registry at least. If your win98 is still
messing up, then it's not the registry. Since you are used to
reinstalling windows, you have nothing to loose to at least save
a current working copy of your registry, this may save you time
if it works. - John
