Messaging skirmish continues between Microsoft, AOL

In a game of my-developer-is-smarter-than-yours, Microsoft took the upper hand yesterday over America Online.

...As of last night, AOL claimed to have blocked Messenger Service for the fourth time, something Microsoft denied. Regardless, Microsoft vowed to continue issuing patches to any efforts by AOL to disable Messenger Services interoperability.

"At this point, we are still committed to providing the interoperability to consumers," said Deanna Sanford, the lead product manager in Microsoft's Consumer and Commerce Group. "We haven't put a deadline on it."

AOL was just as defiant, insisting that it too will continue to block Messenger Service for the foreseeable future.

I don't really like these things, but downloaded Microsoft's messenger to take a look. What's most interesting about this one is that is does a good job of leveraging existing tools. Chat in Microsoft's IM is done via Microsoft NetMeeting. Messages are exchanged via Hotmail. I've never used AOL's IM but have used their other client, ICQ.

I haven't yet heard how the folks who actually use the tools are responding to it, but it strikes me as a wise choice to make this a pathway to other tools like web-mail and chat clients rather than going in IQC's direction and it an all-in-one reinvention of those features.
