Sounds like a very sound approach. I have not yet established such a structured system - but I probably should. Although I rarely have more than 10% of my portfolio in the nets (either long or short) - it would probably be better to have such trades in a separate account - it would be safer, and it would allow me to better judge if these short term trades I am making are really worth the effort.
