I have had multiple Gateways and Dells both at home and at work. I have had good experiences with both companies/products. My current work computer is a Dell. My current home PC is a Gateway. I was one of the original Gateway customers dating back to the 386 days. I have found knowledgeable and not so knowledgeable tech reps at both companies. As far as ordering, I have found GTW to be more flexible. Last time around, Dell's inflexibility was the deciding factor. I wanted a SCSCI controller and SCSI CD-ROM. Dell would only include these options if you also purchased a SCSI hard drive (which added lots of cost for something I didn't need/want). Also, Dell refused to sell a full tower in the Dimension series.

Overall, if forced to pick just one vendor, I would lean towards Gateway.
