Mylex bought by IBM today. IBM filling the storage gaps and scrapped alot of their old ideas on storage.IBM doing what it does well. Try to make a proprietary system and when then doesn't work they muscle themselves into the industry by buying the necessary tools. I don't think they are done buying just Mylex and Sequent. Just MHO.

This is really the first serious attempt by IBM in 15 years to become a major storage vendor.HP and IBM trying to chip away at l'il gorilla EMC.The money is flowing to storage and no one is giving away this area to EMC.
I think their is concern that IBM will try to eliminate competition by lowering margins razor thin. I wouldn't count on it. It's not the way IBM operates. They'll try to use economies of scale to try and lower costs to raise margins. They'll be pushing large SAN's networks through their business solutions program. The only thing that thin margins gets you at IBM is an unwanted lunch meeting with Lou and the boys.
Lou made a great call when he came to IBM, restructured, dimmed the lights on the retail business and moved the company from a hardware company,to a business solutions(largest software company on the planet) along with selling some hardware with tons of software in it.

All this gearing up and laying off 1100 storage personel at the same time. Seems like a plan.

Brocade has to be happy campers today with IBM putting some major resources into storage.

ALL in ALL-FC heating up, but why is CISCO so quiet. They aren't giving up this space or are they? Maybe no SAN's for Cisco but perhaps
FC for other applications? Anyway enough meandering.

Best of luck, ED
