Have you used Yahoo! Email? To compose and receive an Email, you only need a browser with Java Script. All of the intelligence and static storage are on the server side. I tend to think of the future cell/PDA as an I/O device to the Internet and corporate servers. Such of a device will only need enough space to store a few applications and personal ID information. This device will be very powerful. It will be powerful enough to do DSP applications such as MPEG II encoding and voice recognition. Look at TI/Intel/MIPS/ARM, embedded processors will be very powerful.
