There's always internet cafes - if you don't mind the public atmosphere. Two years ago, I spent six months traveling through Asia and parts of Africa and the Middle East - I brought a notebook computer with me, but ended up doing most of my net access from internet cafes. I was able to find them in most major cities - and they were easier than trying to figure out how to dial in (and definitely much less expensive - average $5-$10 an hour). However, there were some places off the beaten path where I was not able to find internet cafes - such as Burma and Viet Nam - but again, it was two years ago.
