I'm guessing here .. so if I get it wrong please let me know.

Of the $5 million spent the vast majority of it came from campaign contributions and not their own pocket.

I do understand that any leftover monies are theirs to keep after retirement from office.

Anyway .. during a campaign, the best they could hope for would be to skim some of that fat off the top. Just might be able to skim enough to pay for one years salary.

I think that it is safe to say that money is a strong motivator for most of these folks. A 50g penalty could go a long way.

But then so could the words "shall be guilty of a felony, punishable by not less that 5 years nor greater than.."
