Japan Chip Makers To Cancel Holidays To Meet Demand-Kyodo

TOKYO -- Five major Japanese electronics makers will cancel planned summer holidays at their production plants for semiconductors and liquid crystal panels in order to meet soaring demand, Kyodo News reported that company officials said Wednesday.

Mitsubishi Electric Corp. (J.MBE or 6503) will cancel its summer vacation of nine to 10 days at its plant in Kumamoto Prefecture and two other principal semiconductor plants, Kyodo said.

The four other electronics makers - Hitachi Ltd. (HIT or 6501), Toshiba Corp. (J.TOS or 6502), NEC Corp. (NIPNY or 6701) and Fujitsu Ltd. (FJTSY or 6702) - have also decided to cancel or shorten summer holidays at their chip plants, Kyodo said.

For production of liquid crystal panels, Toshiba has retracted a plan to close its plant in Saitama Prefecture for 13 days, the report said.

NEC already decided to cancel holidays at its plant in Akita and Kagoshima prefectures.
