Andrew, there was an excellent post a long time back explaining in detail the differences among the six grades of fuel oil (#1-#6). Unfortunately, I've misplaced the reference and don't recall it--maybe Charles has it or can explain it. My understanding is that the sole difference between #1 and #2 is sulpher content--#1 must be under .05%, whereas #2 can be as high as .30%. GRNO currently expects that it's fuel will be in the low range of #2--probably between .06-.09%. But the sulpher content of the feedstock will vary. In itself, sulpher has lubricant qualities, hence it is a desireable additive in motor oils, provided that your engine doesn't "smoke a lot!" At that point, you're transferring that sulpher into the atmosphere, which is not good news. Diesel fuels must be dyed before they can be sold at retail in order to insure that they are kept distinct--is it #1 that's blue and #2 that's red? or vice versa?--somebody help me out here.

In northern states, additives are often put in diesel in the winter to insure that it will flow freely in very cold conditions--service stations used to distinguish between diesels with and without these additives, but it's been over 10 years since I had a diesel vehicle, and I've lost track of some of these distinctions.
