"liquid" means that it has plenty of volume, plenty of trades; a market has "liquidity" when you can buy and sell quickly and without paying an enormous spread... an example of an illiquid market would be the stock exchange in Senegal... traders stick to the most liquid instruments because they always want to minimize their risk. (Sorry I just got back from the dentist and the laughing gas is still muddling me)
