Cabletron Enhances Service Provider Content Hosting and
Enterprise Server Farm Solutions

Business Wire - July 27, 1999 13:13

ROCHESTER, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 27, 1999--

SmartSwitch Routers Aggregate Gigabit and Fast Ethernet Server Links Among Multiple Servers to
Improve Capacity, Availability and Reliability

Cabletron Systems (NYSE:CS) today announced that its content hosting and server farm solutions
have been enhanced through a unique combination of server bandwidth aggregation, intelligent load
balancing and Internet security technologies.

Sun Microsystems' (NASDAQ:SUNW) Sun Trunking 1.2 software and Nokia's (NYSE:NOK) IP
firewalls, when combined with Cabletron's BIG/ip load balancing technology and SmartSwitch Router
(SSR) series of Layer 3 and Layer 4 switches, efficiently control traffic for Internet and Application
Service Provider Web sites, while dramatically increasing the security, reliability, availability and
performance of enterprise computing clusters.

The SSR 8600, 8000, 2100 and 2000 feature Cabletron-developed SmartTRUNK technology, and
are fully interoperable with Sun Microsystems' Sun Trunking 1.2 software (see related Sun
announcement, dated 7/27/99). Together, the technologies protect mission-critical information from
server or network outages, while increasing overall application throughput on the world's leading
Internet computing platform. The SSR can support as many as eight 10/100 Fast Ethernet (up to 800
Mbps full duplex) or two Gigabit Ethernet (up to 2,000 Mbps full duplex) trunked ports to any single
Sun server. Cabletron's SmartSwitch 9000/6000/2000 chassis have been interoperable with Sun
Trunking software since October 1997, and were independently verified by The Tolly Group in 1998
("Tolly Tested" Document #8280 and "Tolly Verified" Document #98257).

Ed Chang, Cabletron's director of SSR products, explains, "Cabletron's SSR Family, which
incorporates Sun Trunking software, provides superior application control, standards-based load
balancing and tremendous bandwidth scalability."

In conjunction with the BIG/ip (see related Cabletron announcements, dated 5/10/99 and 2/1/99),
Cabletron's SSR forwarding capacity is combined with the BIG/ip's load balancing intelligence to
protect users from server failure, software failure, content failure and traffic bottlenecks. Internet quality
control is assured through support for seven different balancing algorithms that address Layers 3
through 7 of the ISO Model.

"Routine server maintenance and updates, as well as new server additions, can be performed without
impacting end users," explains PG Menon, Cabletron's director of product management. "Customers'
overall IT infrastructure will be more stable without the single points of failure common to large,
complex server environments. Leading companies like Microsoft, Tower Records, Egghead Software
and Network Solutions, Inc. are already reaping the benefits."

Cabletron's partnership with Nokia (see related Nokia announcement, dated 8/10/98) leverages the
industry-leading CheckPoint Firewall-1 security suite. Together, the solution allows service providers
and enterprises to maintain the swift and constant flow of information throughout a secure public or
private network, preventing unauthorized access to the Internet, corporate intranets and extranets.
Nokia's IP 330/440/650 are high-performance, cost-effective security appliances that give users the
ability to define a single, integrated security policy that can be distributed across multiple firewall
gateways, and managed remotely from anywhere on the network.

"End users will enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing that their customers, partners and
employees can quickly and securely access business-critical content and applications from anywhere at
any time with 99.999% reliability," said Trent Waterhouse, Cabletron's director of marketing,
enterprise business unit.
