[If the costs are comparable people will opt for DSL. My experience has been that you can't trust the cable to always be on so if reliability is a requirement you must have a back up system. I do. How many other people will even attempt the hassle when they have a choice? ]

I thought it would be appropriate to report that the problems AT&T/TCI were having with the SF Bay Area cable infrastructure seem to be over. The service has improved dramatically - both in speed and reliability.

My cable connection has been down perhaps twice in the last month but only for a few minutes at most and the speed has been increasing steadily. The other night the connection speed was extraordinarily fast. I downloaded a test file at over 2 mbit/s; typically my download test speeds are around 800 kbit/s.

Obviously I am extremely pleased. I've cancelled my dial up ISP and shortly the second phone line will also be history.
