Hettrick regains post as GOP Assembly leader
By Ed Vogel Donrey Capital Bureau
CARSON CITY -- Assemblyman Lynn Hettrick, R-GardÂnerville, has been elected as the Republican leader in the Assembly for the third consecutive session. During a Thursday meeting in Reno, Hettrick edged out Assemblyman David Humke, R-Reno, in a 9-5 vote to become minority leader. A legislator since 1993, Hettrick, 54, works as an investment manager. Humke and Assemblywoman Barbara Cegavske, R-Las Vegas, will become co-assistant minority leaders for the 1999 session.
"Everyone is happy," Humke said. "We had a good and frank discussion." The number of Republicans in the Assembly has dropped from 21 to 17 to 14 in the past three session. Six of the 14 Assembly Republicans are Southern Nevadans. While nearly two-thirds of the Assembly members are from Clark County, the last person from that area to serve as speaker, or Assembly leader, was Democrat John Vergiels in 1983. |
