MTI Technology Storage Servers Support Iridium Worldwide Operations

PR Newswire - July 28, 1999 10:45

MTI Products Manage Billing Information For World's First Global Satellite-Based Communications
Company

ANAHEIM, Calif., July 28 /PRNewswire/ -- MTI Technology Corp. (Nasdaq: MTIC), a leading
provider of comprehensive storage solutions, announced that Iridium LLC (Nasdaq: IRID) has
selected MTI's enterprise RAID storage systems and tape libraries to manage its customer billing
applications worldwide. MTI also will supply Iridium with storage management software to manage
its data-intensive applications.

Headquartered in Washington, D.C., Iridium is the world's first provider of satellite-based, global
phone and paging services. Using a network of 66 low earth-orbiting satellites and existing terrestrial
cellular systems, Iridium enables customers to communicate virtually anywhere in the world using a
single, hand-held satellite phone, pager and phone number.

"Iridium chose MTI because the company provided a reliable and flexible architecture for managing
information storage across the Iridium enterprise," said Mark Scrimshire, Iridium's director of
corporate information services. "MTI storage components are integrated into the development and
delivery of the company's information-intensive customer management applications. MTI's storage
solutions support our efforts in providing customers with the highest level of service."

As part of the storage systems installation, MTI will provide Iridium with Gladiator storage servers,
several Infinity digital linear tape libraries and data management software from Legato. The products
give the company a comprehensive storage solution that provides high-capacity, high-performance
and near-instantaneous access to its mission-critical billing applications.

Using data management software enables Iridium's administrative staff to monitor, control and
manage data libraries throughout the networked environment from anywhere in the enterprise. MTI's
storage solutions will support more than 160 of Iridium's Sun-based E-4000 and E-5000 servers
operating Sybase and Oracle databases. The combination of MTI storage arrays and Sun servers will
bring the company's total storage capacity to nearly 6 terabytes.

"Global communications companies such as Iridium depend on storage to manage and archive critical
information in highly available wide area networks," said Kevin J. Liebl, MTI's vice president of
marketing. "As a leading provider of fault-tolerant storage solutions, MTI gives customers the reliable
storage tools they need to accommodate massive repositories of data and the flexibility to expand to
meet continued business growth and global expansion. We are pleased to be able to support
Iridium's efforts with our enterprise storage products and services."

Iridium LLC became the world's first global satellite phone and paging company on Nov. 1, 1998. Its
network of 66 low earth-orbiting satellites, combined with existing terrestrial cellular systems, enables
customers to communicate around the globe. For more information visit the company's World Wide
