I think a lot of the discussion re. "world class city" is focusing on a "utopian" city. Silly.

All the large cities mentioned here are, in reality, more than one "city". Joan did a good job of illustrating this when she gave me the "DC" geography lesson. NY and LA are not one place kind of places.

My candidate for world class city in the terms it's been discussed here would be Tokyo. Not too multi-cultural, though. Near universal understanding of honor and shame.
