Thanks, Michael, for an honest post. I guess it takes one Southerner to recognize when another is being honest. I suspect we share the same twisted, bitter-sweet relationship with black people ~ the servants, but also the intelligent kids our own age trying to transcend their own past, as we tried to transcend ours.

I was brought up *never* to use the N-word ~ it was simply not done. A well-brought-up white Southern woman said "colored." Yes, I had a black nurse/nanny ~ her name was Ceolie. I don't know what happened to her. I remember she got mad at me when I asked her if she gave chocolate milk ~ I knew that my mother gave regular milk. And when we moved from New Orleans to Baton Rouge, Eleanora was substituted. What a strange way of doing things. I learned more about respecting people of other races from them than anyone else, ever.
