It is always difficult to predict what companies will dominate and which will not. Management has to set a course and must stick with it. The companies that show they can make money and can reinvest for growth will eventually survive the rush and will buy up the failing competition. The question remains. What is the Internet? Are we looking at electronic publishing and on line catalogues or something more? The models we see in the health sector now indicate that they are relying on ad revenue or with several the ability to run electronic billing. Then there is the e-commerce where you are selling goods. Will the states allow the uncontrolled sale of prescription drugs, or the FDA for that matter?

The future will become clear as we approach the new millenium. Meanwhile we look for new developments such as the standards that will be set at a federal level for electronic medical records. Are these companies ready? Do they even know that the Federal Government is about to set these standards once the Y2K issues are resolved? What language, form and levels of security will be required? We will see. The companies who are prepared will prevail. Those who are not will scramble.
