You are not alone, that's how I got in the market as well, seems quite common these days. Makes me wonder how many billions of internet market cap are based on credit cards.:~o Seems like I heard somewhere that that was the prelude to Japan's fall. Unlike you though, I didn't start out paper trading, just opened a margin account with Ameritrade and started firing live ammo. I view it as a costly education. One thing I have learned, is when I trade small amounts that I am not worried about losing I can do quite well, but when I have my lunch money at stake I tend to lose it. Fear can be a killer.
