Viatel 'Lights' Second Ring of Its Five-Ring Circe Pan-European Network

July 29, 1999 07:32 AM
NEW YORK, July 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Viatel, Inc. VYTL today announced that the second phase of its Circe Pan-European Network -- a fresh-build, state-of-the-art, cross-border, fiber-optic, broadband network -- has entered commercial service.
"With the on-time and within-budget completion of Circe Two, Viatel has once again proven that it delivers," said Michael J. Mahoney, Viatel's President and Chief Executive Officer.

Circe Two, which is 2005 route kilometers in length, links Dusseldorf, Frankfurt and Mannheim in Germany along with Strasbourg and Nancy in France to the Phase One cities of London, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Brussels, Antwerp, Paris and Amiens. Circe One went "live" on March 15, 1999. When completed, the Circe Pan-European Network will be 8,700-route kilometers in length and link over 40 major cities in Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Circe Phase Three -- which links Koln, Essen, Dortmund, Bremen, Hamburg, Berlin, Dresden, Leipzig, Nurnberg, Munich and Stuttgart and, together with Phases One and Two, creating a German national network -- will be operational in the first quarter of 2000. Phases Four and Five -- which expand the Network's reach throughout France and Switzerland via two additional fiber rings -- will be operational in June 2000.

Viatel's Circe Pan-European Network is a self-healing, fully bi-directional SDH network. It employs the world's most advanced fiber-optic cable as well as state-of-the-art transmission and switching equipment. The Circe Pan-European Network is supported on a 24x7 basis through dual international network operations centers in Egham, England and Somerset, New Jersey.

Viatel is an integrated provider of communications services to end-users, carriers and resellers in over 230 countries and territories worldwide. The Company currently operates one of the largest pan-European networks, with international gateways in London and New York; network operations centers in Egham, England and Somerset, New Jersey; network points of presence in over 45 European cities; a direct sales force in 12 Western European cities and indirect sales outlets in more than 180 additional locations throughout Western Europe.

Certain matters discussed in this release are forward-looking statements that involve risks and uncertainties, including construction risks and other risks detailed from time to time in the Company's reports filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, including those contained in the Company's Annual Report on Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 1998.
