1998 MPEG Video Semiconductor Market Share Summary
Here is a quick summary of the worldwide revenue and unit shipments from MPEG video semiconductors in calendar 1998. The total market reached $616 million and over 51 million unit shipments for the year. Table 5 below shows our estimates for overall revenue, units, and percent of the MPEG video semiconductor market claimed by each of the key players in the MPEG semiconductor industry.

While C-Cube shipped almost 6 million more MPEG chips in 1998, its unit strength was in MPEG-1 decoders and not the pricier MPEG-2 decoder chips. Last year, ASPs for MPEG-2 decoders were roughly double the price of MPEG-1 decoders. Overall, ST Microelectronics leveraged their top position in MPEG-2 decoders for on-line network application to capture 33% of MPEG revenues in 1998, while C-Cube finished with 32%.
Although a victim of falling MPEG-1 ASPs, for the second consecutive year ESS Technology finished in third place in the overall MPEG semiconductor market.
ESS logged $59 million in revenue for an 11.8% share on 10 million unit shipments. Their unit shipment share was 19.5% of the total market.
Coming in fourth is LSI Logic with $50 million in revenue for an 8.2% share. They are second to ST in MPEG-2 decoders with 3.6 million units shipped for a 13.4% share of the market. They have a significant presence in both the published media and on-line network categories for MPEG-2 decoders.
Other manufacturers, in descending order, are Philips, Sigma Designs, Winbond, and LuxSonor. The other category is made up of smaller MPEG semiconductor vendors. |
