Sun sees x86 as a long term threat cutting into iron sales; hence the queasy commitment. Looks like Linux is the UNIX world's last great hype (I mean hope) for an alternative x86 desktop OS. Sun could have benefited greatly if they had a clear x86 strategy a few years back; I think the "window" of opportunity has passed though.
