As far as the supposedly obsolete MFC, what I found is that since it's a thin wrapper around the native Windows API, by learning it I'm really 80% there in terms of knowing the nitty-gritty parts of programming Windows.

After having worked with VCL (using C++ Builder) for a couple of years now, I simply cannot imagine taking that giant step backward to MFC.
