I am taking exception to your broad statement that the "Germans are second to none when it comes to solid science".
Science covers a wide spectrum of subject matter; however, IMO U.S. "Medical science" is most likely the most advanced and carefully produced in the world thanks mainly to our participation in military wars ongoing involving body repair and a meticulous FDA (which took ages it seemed to okay Viagra later approved in Europe).
Having relatives and acquaintances in Germany who have undergone certain surgeries that I personally have undergone here in the U.S., one set being bi-lateral hip implants, in comparison I am certainly glad to have had my operations done in the good old USofA.
