Well, you know, maybe the white women had it better in the Indian tribes. Some of those Indian tribes were matrilineal, some matrifocal, not exactly matriarchies, but women held positions of power and respect, better than white women at the time. In some, e.g., Hopi, the women owned all the land, and the men worked on both their wive's land and their mother's land ~ and so forth.
And then they had children, and had families, not too many women would give those up.
I know I'm mostly white, but part Indian, I don't know how the mix happened, everyone claims their Indian ancestor was the squaw, no one says their Indian ancestor was a man. Ever notice that? |
