I would submit that this is not madness but the risk of living in a free society. This has been going on for 100 years, only now, with our aggressive media and "spot news" are instant and detail stories and pictures brought into our living rooms; and not at the top of the hour, but 24 hours per day, on several stations at a time.
The world is not getting any worse.... but technology tells about it more often, more detail and really, really, fast.
It's sad, but it happens. Sadly, it will continue, whether they use fertilizer, guns, Ryder Trucks, chemical weapons, pipe bombs or knives. You cannot ban everything.
