Joseph, >>>and yet the answer is so simple: Lou knows it, and knows it all. <<<

I will grant you Lou knows a lot:
o Cost cutting
o Marketing
o Accounting and Accounting trickery
o Management of expectations (particularly wrt Wall Street)

But, I have reservations when Lou admits to being clueless when it comes to the vision thing. To be successful in the hi-tech industry without understanding technology, without creativity, without imagination - in other words without caring about what you are selling - is for me somehow disconcerting.

I am not a big fan of Steve Jobs - but does he have imagination, does he care about technology, does he have legitimacy in this new economy?

Wrt Craig Barrett - does he understand technology, does he have intensity, does he have a roadmap, does he know where he wants to take his technology, can he manage?

Wrt Bill Gates - there is a complete package - the only thing he lacks is a decent personality.

You could pretty much put Armstrong at AT&T, Larry Elison, and a lot of others on the same stage - and they all have something in common.

Somehow, Lou Gerstner, IMO does not belong.

But, I admit it, I don't really get it.

Mary
