I wouldn't be so religious about ISDN, Tero. I think it is becoming more a liability than an asset to have it. If I would be a competitor to DTAG I would bring up EU commission the fact that the German government subsidize DTAG's access.

Southwestern Bell, spent 3.4 billion dollar (42% of the company's total capital expenditures between 1988 and 1993) making all of its access lines ISDN-ready. That's a major commitment. They may end up saddled with this technology baggage, with long depreciation period, and the CLEC's will come form behind and eat their lunch with VoADSL as I mention here.

This is becoming more and more a concern that RBOC's have to consider.
The heart of the matter is unbundling the copper loop. In Germany, as in many other countries where the operator holds the local loop, it is a matter of the CLEC to be the one pushing ADSL.

VoADSL is the technology that will make possible for the CLEC to beat the incumbent. We should give a hard look at this technology. Moreover, the day is not that distant when ERICY will come out with new data access and there would be more competition for ISDN. Today the incumbents have ice in the middle of the desert. (the copper loop) Everyone wants it. Tomorrow, they risk being left with wet sand at their feet.

Europe has to seriously consider put their regulatory environment more in line with the speed of technological development. This is necessary for the competitive of the European economies.

Just MO.
